Today, on my 5th anniversary at my current
employer, I’m thankful for my job. The
obvious is that I’m very grateful to be gainfully employed, but it’s really
much more than that. I’ve found a great
career for a day job, and am part of one of the best teams with which I’ve ever
worked.
Whenever anyone asks me what I like most about HR, I
generally have two responses. The first
is that it’s a field that constantly changing, especially with regards to the
benefits administration side of things. ADA and
FMLA laws are always being updated, and then there’s the PPACA (Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act, what most people simply refer to as “all of
that healthcare legislation”). There’s
always something new to learn as the field evolves. Add to that the extra responsibility I’ve
taken on over the past year, and I definitely need to stay on my toes!
On that note, managing disability and FMLA cases have become a big part of
my workload, which is a nice tie in to my
second response: I very much enjoy being an advocate for our employees. It’s really a delicate balance sometimes, as
some people will always try to take advantage of certain situations. For the most part, however, people find
themselves in predicaments that make it hard to balance work, family, and a
variety of other issues they may face.
Giving them the tools to help sort it all out is a great feeling.
Finally, though I’m not sure anyone I work with actually
reads this blog and I’ll never name anyone or talk about the company I work for
on it, I really value my team. Everyone
is conscientious – there’s no ball dropping.
I’ve also been blessed with the best supervisor I’ve ever worked
for. She’s a mentor if there ever was
one. Here’s to another 5 years of us all sticking together - we're unstoppable!
